Experience Norway's finest view at sunrise from the summit of Gaustatoppen on a snowshoe hike! The historic Gaustabanen railway ensures a comfortable and unique journey back down.
Norway's best sunrise view! From the summit of Gaustatoppen, you can see in all directions with a 360-degree panorama. As the highest mountain in Telemark and southeastern Norway, it towers above all surrounding peaks. On a clear day, you can see across vast parts of Norway – covering up to 60,000 km2. We begin the tour at the Gaustabanen parking lot (1151 m) to prepare for the ascent.
Tours are available every Wednesday and Saturday throughout February and March!
The route leads up Longefonn until we hit the mountain ridge that takes us to the telecommunications tower at the summit (1875 m). Depending on conditions, we may venture across the ridge to the highest point, "pælen," at 1883 m. Regardless, we will enjoy the breathtaking sunrise and views from the top. The descent is comfortably handled by the Gaustabanen railway inside the mountain – a historic experience in itself. Opened in 1959, it served as a secret NATO transport artery deep within the rock.
This is a demanding winter mountain hike with an ascent of 725 meters. Proper equipment and readiness for sudden weather changes are essential. Group size is limited to a maximum of 8 participants. The tour ends once we can take Gaustabanen down to the parking lot, usually opens at 10:00.
For a safe trip, sturdy winter boots are required (no sneakers), along with a shell jacket, trousers, mittens, and a hat. Protect yourself with sunglasses and sunscreen, and bring a backpack (20–30L) with at least one liter of water and an extra warm jacket for breaks.
